Here is Classic FM's manifesto, taken from their website:

The idea of making music that was originally composed during the course of the past 1000 years relevant to 21st century life may at first glance appear daunting.

However Classic FM is the media choice of nearly one fifth of the UK population. So what are the ingredients that have made Classic FM the UK's most popular commercial radio station?

An extensive piece of research involving thousands of in-depth interviews, commissioned by Classic FM, identified that much of the success of Classic FM has come from a growing trend to seek environments that help cope with the stress of modern life. Classic FM seeks to improve the mood of the listener by providing an environment to relax, find balance and stir emotions. It's a mental breath of fresh air, restoring mind, body and spirit.

Classical music is at the heart of everything we do at Classic FM. Just take a look at our CD library with more than 150,000 tracks of the world's finest recordings, and you'll see why we believe classical music can and should be a part of everyone's lives - regardless of age, which is why the station starts young, with music education in schools an important part of its work.

Classic FM makes classical music a relevant part of the modern lifestyle. To achieve this, Classic FM plays familiar music alongside less known pieces, all chosen to uplift, soothe and stir the emotions. This approach is designed to make classical music as accessible to as many people as possible. It is underpinned by rigorous quality control, ensuring that listeners hear the very best recordings of their favourite music.

EWWWWWWW!!!!!!

Classical music does not have to be "made relevant" - good music is always relevant! And it CERTAINLY doesn't deserve to be reduced to ambient background noise for business executives to "relax" to. Classic FM have unwittingly told us everything that's WRONG about their station. YUCK!!! *vomits*

Radio 3 is The Daddy.

I like Classic FM though. :(

Okay well I don't; their hosts have louder voices than the music they play so I have to constantly turn it up and down, the commercials they choose to air are obnoxious as hell (don't know if you remember the ones here the guy repeats EVERY SINGLE WORD TWICE, AS IF THE LISTENING AUDIENCE FINDS THAT CLEVER AND APPEALING, UGH), and at one point they restricted access to UK residents, so if I wanted to listen to it I had to do so "illegally".

But really, I have to agree with them, Cundog. People these days just don't care to make classical music an enriching aspect of their lives. Advertising it as "ambient background noise" is the only way they're going to get more than a few nerdy listeners. Those who wouldn't normally listen to it are being exposed in some manner; wouldn't you say that's better than not at all?

Well OK, yes. I agree with the idea of broadening the audience for classical music. What I don't agree with is that beyond a lowly function as chill-out noise, it has no relevance in the 21st century, which is basically what Classic FM have said. They're demeaning great music, and presenting this as an act of charity, like they've found a job out the back sweeping leaves for a doddering old man!

Beethoven ain't goin' nowhere - there'll always be a certain minority who are curious enough and love music.

Which is why nothing Classic FM has said will distort the perception of true enthusiasts - it will only encourage those who wouldn't normally think to listen to give it a try. If they're intelligent enough, they'll see that it's more than just something to relax to. ;D

Oh, I don't think Classic FM's existence does any harm. But I stand by my criticism of their values!

As far as what they actually play goes, not much to criticise - except the limited range and too many mushy film scores. Someone who really gains anything meaningful from Classic FM will most likely take it some other place sooner or later.

I actually prefer listening to BlueFM when I'm working and stuff. It's mainly chill-out music with classical elements, and having a pleasing melody in my head helps me concentrate easier. The only thing I don't like is when they play instrumental versions of overrated pop songs. Makes me want to choke a bitch.

But other than that no complaints!

Last night I had a dream where I made up a rhyme to the tune of Helen Shapiro's 'Walking Back To Happiness':

I have got an itchy back
(wop ah woh yeah yeah)
I am going to scratch it like heck
(wop ah woh yeah yeah)
I have just scratched my back
Now I do not feel it attack
-ing me because it is itchy
(wop ah woh yeah yeah)

I awoke chuckling at the rhyme.
